July 2013

Dr. Folefac Aminkeng has received the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR), Research Trainee – Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award for two years.

We held the 7th CPNDS Scientific Advisory Board Meeting with over 60 attendees including the project investigators, collaborators, clinician surveillors, research staff, and trainees. We also hosted key representatives from Pfizer Canada, Health Canada, and Genome BC. 

Our Master’s Student John Lee and two of our Postdoctoral Fellows, Dr. Folefac Aminkeng and Dr. Leah Mwai, were awarded one-year scholarships from the CIHR Drug Safety and Effectiveness Cross-Disciplinary Training (DSECT) Program

September 2012

Our Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Ricardo Jimenez, was awarded a two-year CIHR Fellowship. He also received the CIHR Bisby Prize, as the highest-ranking candidate in the CIHR Health Professional Postdoctoral Fellowship competition.

June 2012

Dr. Bruce Carleton was awarded the Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics Senior Investigator Award to recognize his career research in the field of clinical pharmacology and pharmacogenomics.

Dr. Colin Ross received a five-year, New Investigator Salary Award from CIHR.

May 2012

BC Children's Hospital Research Institute awarded Dr. Folefac Aminkeng with the Bertram Hoffmeister two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship .

March 2012

CPNDS hosted a Clinical Practice Guidelines Workshop where experts developed clinical practice recommendations for pharmacogenetic testing and therapeutic options for six drugs or drug classes: warfarin, codeine, carbamazepine, cisplatin, tamoxifen and anthracyclines.

December 2011

Dr. Mahyar Etminan was interviewed for the New York Times as lead author of a 2009 study that looked at the increase in the risk of asthma and wheezing in both children and adults exposed to acetaminophen. [Read the full NYT article]

Our Masters student, Kusala Pussegoda received Best Poster Award at the Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine Conference. “Pussegoda K, Ross CJ, Visscher H, Yazdanpanah M, Brooks B, Rassekh R, Carleton B, Hayden M & the CPNDSConsortium (2011). Replication of TPMT genetic variants highly associated with cisplatin-induced hearing loss in children. Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine Conference (Hinxton, UK.)”

Our PhD student, Kaarina Kowalec was awarded a Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada Travel Award to attend the Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicine Conference (Hinxton, U.K.).

August 2011

Our postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Ricardo Jimenez-Mendez was awarded a travel award from the International Society of Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE) to present results from our work on Asthma at the ISPE Annual conference.

June 2011

Our Masters student, Kaitlyn Shaw received Best Poster Award at the BCCHR Student Research Forum. “Shaw K, Amstutz U, Hildebrand C, Rassekh SR, Braun J, Ross C, Hayden, Carleton B. Pharmacogenetics of Warfarin in Children. Vancouver, BC. Presented on June 16, 2011.”

April 2011

Our post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Ricardo Jimenez-Mendez was awarded the Drug Safety and Effectiveness Cross-Disciplinary Training (DSECT) Program Fellowship. This is a CIHR funded program to train future researches in drug safety and effectiveness.

Our PhD student, Kaarina Kowalec was awarded a Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR) Doctoral Research Award for three years to investigate drug-induced liver injury in patients with Multiple Sclerosis.

Our Masters student, Tenneille Loo was awarded the Michael Cuccione Foundation graduate studentship award by the Child & Family Research Institute, as well as the Frederick Banting and Charles Best graduate scholarship award by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
