The BC Children's Hospital Research Institute's facilities are located in the heart of Vancouver on the 46-acre Oak Street campus. The campus is home to two leading health care organizations: BC Children's Hospital and BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre. It also houses child, adolescent and women's mental health services.
This close proximity of BC Children’s and BC Women’s affords our researchers access to the largest clinical service of its kind in Canada and one of the largest in North America. BC Children's is the major referral centre in B.C. for acutely ill or injured children and more than 20,000 women are seen annually through BC Women's specialized women's health programs.
The Research Institute is it the largest research institute of its kind in Western Canada in terms of people, productivity, funding and size. It is comprised of more than 264,000 square feet spanning five buildings with the following programs:
- East Block: Immunity in Health & Disease; Nutrition & Metabolism; and Reproduction & Healthy Pregnancy
- North Block: Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics
- South Block: Cardiovascular Sciences; Genetics; Oncology; and Reproduction & Healthy Pregnancy
- New translational research building: Diabetes; Immunity in Health & Disease; and Nutrition & Metabolism
These buildings are connected by the Chieng Family Atrium and Education Link.
The Research Institute also oversees research space in both the BC Children's and BC Women’s buildings, as well as additional labs/offices housing University of British Columbia (UBC) personnel on the Oak Street campus.
The Research Institute's building management is undertaken by an on-site laboratory and research facilities manager whose primary role is to facilitate research by ensuring that day-to-day operational requirements are met. Building management is done in partnership with BC Children’s, BC Women’s and UBC; for instance, the Institute receives on-site support – including housekeeping, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and other associated plant services – from BC Children's and BC Women's.
Renovations to research laboratory space are managed by the institute, with the assistance of the BC Children's and BC Women's Planning Department. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in the success of several current and ongoing projects.
The laboratory and research facilities manager, along with facilities staff, are responsible for meeting the Research Institute's current and future information system/information technology needs. The Research Institute, through collaboration with the UBC Faculty of Medicine University Network Project, has completed a network upgrade that offers onsite clinical and non-clinical researchers access to myriad cross-site research data.
