Immunity in Health & Disease Research

Child immunology researchers are working in basic, translational and clinical research areas to create and implement better vaccines, to understand why children develop infections, to prevent and treat autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes (T1D) and systemic lupus (SLE), and to understand the mechanisms underlying inflammatory bowel diseases.

Defects in the immune system underlie a wide variety of pediatric illnesses, ranging from cancer and autoimmune disease, to life-threatening infections, and primary immunodeficiencies. In addition, the study of immunology underlies the development of childhood vaccines. With such a wide impact, researchers from several different disciplines need to work together in cross-program collaborations to understand the underlying immunophysiology and immunopathology of pediatric illnesses, and to develop new diagnostic techniques and treatment interventions.
