The research building at BC Children's Hospital is the largest institute of its kind in Western Canada in terms of people, productivity, funding and size. Oak Street Campus

The 46-acre Oak Street Campus (commonly referred to as the C&W Campus) is home to three leading health care organizations: BC Children’s Hospital, BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre and  Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. Ideally located, the campus is only a 10 minute drive from downtown Vancouver and a 30 minute drive from the University of British ColumbiaMaps & Directions.

The research building is located in the heart of the Oak Street campus (950 West 28th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5Z 4H4). The research community at BC Children's Hospital currently has a population of nearly 1,000 which includes trainees, faculty members, research staff and administrators. The institute has both ‘wet bench’ laboratory and ‘dry lab’ clinical research areas, and other areas to facilitate particular areas of research and training such as a stores facility, education centre and a study centre. Coming Soon - Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC)
The BC Children's Hospital & BC Women's Hospital Redevelopment Project
is an initiative to build the new Acute Care Centre and to renovate existing facilities onsite. New construction, renovations and relocations will continue in phases until the projected project completion date of 2018-2019.


Transportation

Bike to Work - The Oak Street Campus is connected by various bike routes and has many options for bike parking onsite. For access to the locked bicycle cages contact nsteel@bcchr.ca

Public Transit - The Oak Street Campus is easily accessible by public transit. Translink buses #25 Brentwood Station/UBC and #17 Oak/Downtown are within steps from the main buildings. The King Edward Skytrain station is also a 15-20 minute walk from the main campus. Translink Trip Planner.

Parking - All parking on site is pay parking, effect 24 hours a day and is available on a first come basis. General parking rates are $3.50/hour or $14.25/day. All UBC/PHSA staff and registered students are eligible for the Daily Pay Parking Program. To be entitled to the $6.50/day rate you must apply for a Multi-Site Daily Pay Parking Hanger and provide a $20 refundable advance deposit.  Note the Oak Street Campus has limited pay parking stalls and is currently full. Charge your Electric Vehicle - The Oak Street Campus is equipped with charging stations for those who drive an electric vehicle. Use of the EV charging stations is free of charge with a valid parking pass. For more information contact aveenstra@bcchr.ca

Carshare Program - PHSA as partnered with three major carshare organizations in the lower mainland as part of its clean energy transportation initiative.  Those onsite are encouraged to carshare and enjoy the many benefits it offers. Car2Go | EVO | Modo | Zipcar

Children & Women's Shuttle - The C&W Shuttle is available for transportation between the King Edward Canada Line Station and the Oak Street campus free of charge. The shuttle departs from the Northwest corner of Cambie and West 24th Avenue approximately every 15 minutes (6:38am to 10:00am). In the afternoon the shuttle departs at the BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre Entrance 77 approximately every 15 minutes (starting at 3:04pm).

Inter-Hospital Shuttle Service - Free shuttle service is available to all the hospitals in Vancouver. The shuttle operates from 7:00am to 5:30pm, Monday-Friday.

The shuttle also offers courier services to and from the shuttle stops. All packages must be properly labelled, handed directly to the driver and must be picked up from the driver at the specified destination.

A VGH-UBC Shuttle leaves every half-hour, beginning at 7:05am. All northbound and southbound buses connect with the UBC/VGH Shuttle but be sure to tell the driver so they have enough time to call ahead to the connecting shuttle.
 

Meeting Rooms

The Oak Street campus has a wide variety of rooms available for meetings or events with the capacity to accommodate groups ranging in size from 6 to 200. Within walking distance is the King Edward shopping mall (990 West King Edward Avenue) which includes a Safeway and a number of smaller restaurants.  Additional restaurants and Oakridge Center are within a 5 minute drive of the Oak Street campus.

The majority of work spaces also have lunch areas for students. At the research building lunch areas located in the South Block (3rd floor), North Block (3rd floor), East Block or Variety Club Building (3rd floor), and the Translational Research Building (4th floor). Each area is equipped with a refrigerator and microwave.


Study Facilities

Reading Room – At the research building, the David Hardwick Reading Room (Room 3051) includes a quiet study space for students and a group meeting room.

Study Learning Commons - Learning & Development  has partnered with the UBC Faculty of Medicine to provide a Study & Learning Commons for all students on the Oak Street Campus. Facilities | UBC Library Services | Room Bookings

The Study & Learning Commons is located on the 4th floor of the Shaughnessy Building. The quickest route from BC Children's Hospital Research Institute is through the North Entrance of Children’s Hospital and follow the corridor, veering left at the junction (past the cafeteria). Continue down the corridor following the signs for “A to L, Women’s Health Centre”. At the intersection take the elevators to the 4th floor. The commons area is on the left (past the red couches)

Study Carrels - Built-in study carrels are available in various locations throughout the research building for students and trainee use. Check with your supervisor or research team more information.


Child Care Centre

The new Djavad Mowafaghian Child Care Centre is a unique partnership between PHSA and the YMCA of Greater Vancouver, providing care for employees working onsite. The centre is open Monday-Friday, 7:30am to 6:00pm with costs ranging from $1,030 to $1,298/month. Please note all child care spots are taken at the time. Secure Storage

Built-in lockers are available in various locations throughout the research building for personal items (you will be asked to provide your own lock). Check with your supervisor or research team for more information on which lockers are designated for your lab.


Mailing & Shipping

For Children’s & Women’s Hospital the mail room is located in the Shaughnessy Building, F100 and is open Monday-Friday, 7:00am to 4:00pm. For more information contact 604-875-3589.

At the research building there are three main mail stations. The main station is located on the 1st floor of the Translational Research Building next to the loading bay entrance. The other stations are located on the 2nd floor of the Variety Club Building next to the photocopier, and on the 3rd floor of BC Children's Hospital Research Institute South Block next to the photocopier. All outgoing mail must be placed in labeled bins.

Mail going to BC Children’s or BC Women’s Hospital (onsite), PHSA agencies and corporate service offices must be placed in the Inter-Department Mail bin. Mail going to UBC must be placed in the UBC bin. All other mail must be placed in the Canada Post bin. Ensure all mail is appropriately marked and for outgoing external mail ensure each envelope has appropriate postage or is coded on the upper left corner so it can be charged to the appropriate cost centre (ask your supervisor for your cost centre).

FedEx picks up from the research building at 2:30 Monday-Friday from the shipping and receiving area. If you have something to be shipped out it must be brought to the outgoing packages table next to the mail station with all the necessary paperwork correctly filled out by 2:00. For incoming courier packages ensure that the courier company has your full address including name, lab (PI) name, room number and bay number.
