    Summary

    My primary research interest lies in the field of pediatric acute kidney injury (AKI), which is defined as an abrupt and often reversible decline in renal function. AKI is a common occurrence in pediatric patients admitted to hospital and is caused by a variety of factors including dehydration, toxic medications, and low oxygen states. My current research work is focused on AKI in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) population and how AKI affects the long term renal function of these patients, years after their initial renal injury.

    My secondary research interest is in the world of pediatric hemodialysis, one of the major forms of renal replacement therapy utilized in children with chronic kidney disease. I am particularly interested in evaluating various methods for quantifying the dose of chronic hemodialysis in children with end-stage kidney disease so that we can properly identify those patients which are being adequately dialyzed or not.

    Current Projects

    Renal Outcomes of Acute Kidney Injury in the Pediatric ICU: A prospective cohort study
    --A longitudinal study to determine the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and to identify predictors of CKD in pediatric patients who have sustained Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) at BC Children's Hospital PICU from 2006-2008.

    Small solute clearance in obese pediatric HD patients. White CT, Frankenfield, Goldstein SG, Mammen C, Neu AM.
    --A retrospective cohort study (2000-2008) utilizing data collected from the CMS ESRD Clinical Measures Project assessing the relationships between BMI and achievement of HD adequacy targets (spKt/V) through a logistic regression model.

    Application of the Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN) Definition to Critically-Ill Children & Neonates.
    --A descriptive study analyzing AKI in the PICU at BC Children's Hospital from 2006-2008 through utilization of the AKIN definition with a direct comparison of the 3 severity classes of AKI (mild, moderate, severe) in terms of AKI etiologies, age, weight, risk of mortality scores, length of ICU stay, ventilation and other physiological parameters.
