My research looks at how diagnostic imaging studies can help doctors determine which areas of their bodies are involved with a specific disease. Then, after they treat the disease, they can use the same imaging studies to find out how well their treatment has done to irradiate the disease.

    Current Projects

Review of a 12 year experience of diagnostic optimized PET/CT in pediatrics. We have chosen to perform our PET/CT studies with low dose CT techniques and after the injection of intravenous contrast enhancement. This allows the patient to have a complete 'one stop' diagnostic study for mainly tumor evaluation that includes an optimized cross-sectional imaging study. This obviates the need for a second body imaging cross-sectional study. We are reviewing our solid tumor experience to determine the added value of this approach. In addition, part of this evaluation will determine the radiation savings of using lower dose CT parameters and what potential pitfalls there may be for using this technique.

In our pediatric lymphoma patients, we are seeking to validate FDG-PET/CT for tumor response assessment in intermediate grade disease and its value in response-adapted therapy. I am also looking at a subset of sarcoma patients to determine the validity of using PET/CT and the timing of studies as a surrogate marker for histologic tumor response.

The use of I-123 mlBG optimized SPECT/CT in neuroblastoma. This study evaluates the use of optimized diagnostic CT with mIBG SPECT studies to determine if there is better localization and increased sensitivity and specificity of lesion detection using this hybrid technique.

Validation of the use of DXA to determine fracture risk in children on steroids as part of Canadian longitudinal STOPP study as well as looking at value of DXA in children with chronic disease.
