I'm a family physician researcher and have been the Director of Research for the University of British Columbia's Department of Family Practice from 1996 to 2006.  I currently co-direct the Centre for Rural Health Research and am co-principal investigator of the Rural Maternity Care New Emerging Team Research Program, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.  Prior to moving to UBC, I practiced as a family physician for twelve years on the Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii.  My focus has been on advancing the rural maternity care research agenda in order to better understand the needs of parturient women and their families, care providers and policy makers.  Current funded studies include the development of a logic model for sustainable maternity care in two isolated BC communities and investigating the role of GP surgeons who provide cesarean section capability for small rural maternity services in BC.  I also co-direct the Michael Smith Foundation-funded Rural and Remote Health Research Network.
