Bob Sun

MD, MA

Investigator, BC Children's Hospital

My research program studies how the air we breathe affects children’s lung health and disease, with a focus on indoor air pollution. With my bioethics background, I also maintain an active interest in issues of equity and fairness in medical innovation.

Volatile Organic Compound Exposure among Children with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Volatile organic compounds are a group of gaseous air pollutants from a variety of sources including household chemicals, combustion, furniture, and building materials. We are studying whether levels of Volatile organic compounds in homes might affect respiratory health in children who have chronic lung disease of prematurity.

Home Environment in Cystic Fibrosis

Though cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition, the severity of lung disease can vary widely among people with cystic fibrosis with the same genetics. We are exploring if there are environmental factors in the home that can influence lung function over time in people with cystic fibrosis.

Wildfire Smoke Infiltration and Pediatric Respiratory Morbidity

We are interested in better understanding how children with asthma and other lung conditions are affected by increased indoor air pollution levels from wildfire smoke. We hope to develop high-value, easy-to-implement strategies that families can use to reduce its impact.
