Dr. Tugault-Lafleur's research program emphasizes healthy eating in children and youth and is shaped by her background as a registered dietitian, fusing methods and theory from nutrition education, public health, behavioural and implementation sciences. Her doctoral research focused on characterizing the dietary quality of Canadian children on school days and identifying factors associated with nutritional outcomes among children and youth using nationally representative dietary survey data. After her doctoral degree, professor Tugault-Lafleur completed a CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship at the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute from 2019-2020.
Dr. Tugault-Lafleur's current research seeks to better understand children's nutrition and physical activity environments, and how they are linked with eating and physical activity behaviours. She also has a strong interest in better designing and evaluating interventions at various levels (the family, community, and policy-level) to promote optimal health outcomes for the Canadian population.
She is a Registered Dietitian (R.D.) with the College of Dietitians of Ontario, and a member of the Canadian Nutrition Society, Dietitians of Canada, and the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.

Diet quality of Canadian children
Drawing on nation-wide dietary data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) as well as data from Canadian Family Studies (the Guelph Family Health Study), I am leading several analyses exploring factors associated with dietary quality among Canadian children. This work lays the foundation to inform future interventions aimed at ameliorating the dietary quality of Canadian children.A Good Start Matters - Creating environments that support physical activity in childcare setting
In recent years, the BC Government has acknowledged the negative influence that physical inactivity and obesity have on the health of children and youth in Canada. We are interested in exploring the impact that the implementation of the Active Play Standards and the use of the intervention materials have on the environment, polices, and practices in childcare settings, as well as on the health behaviours in children. The Sino-Canadian Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative (SCHeLTI)
This is a multicentre, cluster-randomised, parallel-group, superiority trial of a multifaceted community-family-mother-child intervention to prevent childhood overweight and obesity.GrantsExamining school day dietary practices: An analysis of national dietary data from the 2004 and 2015 Canadian Community Health Surveys. Research Roundup: April 2022
This month’s Research Roundup covers the impact of mandatory Active Play Standards on childcare centres’ policies and practices in British Columbia, a positive and supportive way to increase health behaviours and maintain bone health in children, and how changing terminology can help support kids with neurodisability.
