Viruses that affect the health of women and their infants are plentiful. Many such infections are preventable through vaccination. My research aims to prevent viral infections in women and their infants using research that expands our understanding of these viruses as well as clinical studies that examine vaccines in action. Demonstrating how existing vaccines can be optimized and aiding the development of new vaccines will ultimately improve the health of women and their children globally.

CMV DETAIL: Improving Identification of Maternal CMV Reinfection and Characterization of Congenital CMV Strains

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital infection globally, which results in an enormous burden of childhood hearing loss and neurodevelopmental delay. This project uses provincial surveillance of congenital CMV cases from 2018 onwards. Data collected will allow us to better understand the importance and role of maternal (re)infection with CMV in the development of congenital CMV, as well as the specific strains of CMV that are transmitted to infants. The information gained from this project will help inform future CMV prevention methods and determine which types of CMV should be included in candidate vaccines.

The NOVA-HIV Study: A Study of Reduced Dosing of the Nonavalent HPV Vaccine in Women Living with HIV

Cervical cancer can be prevented through HPV vaccination, as HPV is the causal agent of virtually all cervical cancers. This vaccine is safe and effective in young women without HIV. However, there are very little data on nonavalent HPV vaccination among the 18 million women living with HIV globally, who constitute a population most vulnerable to HPV and cervical cancer. This study will determine whether two doses of 9vHPV vaccine can be used in women living with HIV instead of three, and will examine additional aspects of HPV vaccination in these women including the detailed immune response, vaccine safety and efficacy, and attitudes towards self-collected HPV samples in this population. This is a multi-site, phase IV clinical trial. Recruitment began in late 2023 and is currently ongoing. Findings from the study will inform global public health policy and programming, as well as inform the global strategy for cervical cancer elimination.
