The health and safety of our participants and Mini Med School Faculty are the top priority. While wearing masks in public spaces can now be a personal choice, masks are still required in spaces dedicated to healthcare and research. Since our faculty include individuals who regularly work in healthcare and research spaces, we will ask all participants to wear masks. They will also be provided on the day of the event.

Are you interested in attending Mini Med School Fraser Valley? Follow the steps below to learn more about the registration process.

Step 1: Are you eligible to attend?

To attend Mini Med School Fraser Valley you must be:

  • A grade 10-12 student based in the Fraser Valley with a passion for health science and research
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as per current BC Public Health Orders

Teachers are invited but are not required to attend. Interested teachers can contact researchevents@phsa.ca to register.

Step 2: Is attending right for you?

Some students may find the Mini Med School learning format challenging or uncomfortable. We encourage you to consider your own preferred learning style and comfort level before deciding to register.

  • The Mini Med School course curriculum has been designed for a senior high school audience. With only one day to explore new scientific concepts, participants should expect a fast-paced learning environment. Similar to a postsecondary seminar, Mini Med School is lecture-based with a small selection of hands-on activities.

  • Attendees will be encouraged to participate in supervised clinical activities and should be comfortable around a variety of samples and specimens found in a hospital or clinical laboratory environment.

  • This is an in-person event hosted at conference facilities available at the Coast Chilliwack Hotel. Participants will be asked to network and interact with over 75 students from various schools across the Fraser Valley as well as our travelling faculty. Strict COVID-19 safety protocols will be implemented, but participants should be comfortable being in an indoor organized event.
Step 3: How to prepare for registration

Before registering you will need to:

  1. Find a sponsor teacher. Students interested in attending Mini Med School require a teacher to sponsor their registration. Your sponsor teacher should be someone who knows you, your personal learning style and could verify you'd be the ideal participant for this special one-day extracurricular activity.

The sponsor teacher should have experience teaching a science, technology, engineering or mathematics course or be a career counsellor. The sponsor teacher may sponsor multiple students. A personal reference is not required and the sponsor teacher is not required to attend the event. The Mini Med School Team will reach out to the sponsor teacher directly if we have concerns regarding your registration or attendance.

  2. Seek permission to miss school. As Mini Med School is a special event held outside the classroom, participants will be expected to make their own arrangements to miss a day of classes with a parent/guardian and the school.

  3. Arrange transportation to the venue. Students will need to make their own arrangements to get to the Coast Chilliwack Hotel. It is centrally located and accessible by public transit.
Step 4: Registration

The link to access the registration form for Mini Med School Fraser Valley will be posted on this page (see Registration Form below) for 7 days between Monday, February 28 to Sunday, March 6, 2022.

Why are you interested in attending Mini Med School Fraser Valley? What do you hope to gain from participating?
How do we select who actually participates?

Mini Med School is a popular program. With limited capacity, we frequently receive more registration requests than we can accommodate. To keep things fair and unbiased for all students, participants will be selected based on a lottery draw. All eligible participants who submit a registration form will have an equal chance of attending.

How will this work?

  • The registration form will be posted for 7 days between Monday, February 28 to Sunday, March 6, 2022. You will have the opportunity to submit the registration form anytime during this week.
  • Student names will then be entered into an online program that randomly selects a requested number of names, similar to drawing names out of a hat.

Selected student participants will be contacted by the Mini Med School Team to confirm their attendance by Friday, March 18.

Students who are not selected will be added to a waitlist and contacted if additional space becomes available. The order of student names on our waitlist will also be randomly sorted by an online program.

Mini Med School strives to empower youth and promote an equitable and inclusive learning environment. Further space is available for students who identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis. Students will be asked to self-identify as Indigenous on the registration form.
