Congratulations to Dr. Michael Klein, who has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his pioneering work integrating family medicine and maternity care in Canada. Dr. Klein is an Investigator Emeritus at BC Children’s Hospital and an Emeritus Professor Department of Family Practice and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia.
Over the course of his distinguished career as a clinician, professor and researcher, Dr. Klein has helped improve health outcomes for babies and new mothers by making maternity care an integral part of family medicine and conducting leading-edge research on childbirth practices.
In 2015, Dr. Klein was named one of the Top 20 Pioneers of Family Medicine Research in Canada by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). CFPC also selected Dr. Klein’s landmark study "Does episiotomy prevent perineal trauma and pelvic floor relaxation? First North American trial of episiotomy" as one of the ten most notable family medicine research studies in Canada.
The BC Children’s Hospital research community would also like congratulate Dr. Dorothy Shaw, VP of Medical Affairs at BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre on her appointment as an Officer to the Order of Canada. Dr. Shaw is recognized for her work advancing women’s rights and improving the health of women, newborns and children around the world.
