    Research Areas
    • Evidence-based medicine
    • Clinical research methodology
    • Evaluation
    • Integrative medicine
    • Complementary and alternative medicine

    Areas of research:

    • The use of clinical research methodology to address questions of public health interest and facilitate decision making.  Examples include determining which drugs have the best effectiveness/safety profiles, and practice evaluation in order to determine the best way to administer care.

    • Development and evaluation of patient-centred approaches through the promotion of integrative medicine.  One specific interest in this domain is the evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine integrated with usual conventional care.

    • Randomized clinical trial methodology, in particular for the development of pragmatic trials to assess usual care practice.

    Current Projects

The effectiveness of traditional Chinese herbal medicine and Qigong on improving quality of life of cancer patients: a pilot randomized clinical trial (CIHR-funded)
This project is a factorial RCT aimed at assessing the efficacy, safety and feasibility of conducting a complex RCT of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), including herbal medicine (against placebo) and Qi gong (against group exercise) to increase energy and quality of life of patients with advanced lung cancer.

TRIPICU study (Transfusion requirements in pediatric intensive care units: a pilot study) (CIHR-funded)
This project is a RCT aimed at assessing the efficacy and safety of using different thresholds to transfuse patients hospitalized in intensive care units.

COPD study in China (Disease burden and management practice of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in China: a pilot study) (CIHR-funded)
This project is a cohort study conducted in China to assess overall change of quality of life over one year in patients with different levels of COPD severity.
