The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an academic competition where participants have just three minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research project to a non-specialist audience. 

Why should you participate?

  • Improve your communication skills; challenge yourself to become a confident and articulate public speaker
  • Gain exposure for your work; inspire others and showcase your research to the BCCHR community
  • Win prizes! 

BCCHR’s top presenters will move onto the UBC Semi-Finals. UBC’s top presenter will compete in a Western Canadian final featuring finalists from the Western provinces. The top presenters from the Western final go on to be featured in a Canada-wide event. Schedule | Semi-Final Prizes
 

Eligibility

To participate in the BCCHR Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Heat you must be:

  • A current UBC Master or Doctoral Student registered in a thesis-based program
  • Based at BC Children’s Hospital or BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre 

If you don't meet these criteria, you may participate in the UBC 3MT Open Heats in March. Please note, that you can only participate in one heat per year. 

Did you participate previously? Previous participants are welcome to compete again but the presentation must be new for 2024. 

Format

Virtual OR in-person.

Participants will have the option to: 

  • Present virtually during the event on Friday, March 1, 2024 OR
  • Present in-front of a live audience on Friday, March 1, 2024 in the Chan Centre for Family Health Education, BCCHR

Your presentation must be based on research that is directly related to your graduate program thesis.

Timeline
  • Wednesday, February 21 – Deadline to register to participate
  • Wednesday, February 28 – Deadline to submit final slides to reseduc@bcchr.ca 
  • Friday, March 1 | 2:00 – 3:00 pm – BCCHR 3MT® Heat. Presented in-person or live-streamed for the BCCHR community and judges
3MT Rules

  • A single, static PowerPoint slide is permitted (no slide transitions, animations or 'movement' of any description, the slide is to be presented from the beginning
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted, without permission.
  • No additional props (e.g. laser pointers, costumes, laboratory equipment) are permitted, without permission.
  • We encourage creative forms of research dissemination.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word. Use of additional languages, singing, reading of sections of poetry or prose, or playing of musical instruments is allowed IF directly related to the research and used sparingly.
  • No notes allowed. Presentations are to be memorized. 
  • Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum. Judges are recommended to deduct marks from presentations that exceed 3 minutes. 
  • Presentations must be based on research directly related to the student’s current graduate program thesis. Research performed for employment should not be presented. Research completed as part of a prior degree should not be presented as current work.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through movement or speech.
  • The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.
Judging Criteria

Comprehension & Content:

  • Did the presentation provide clear background and significance to the research question?
  • Did the presentation provide clear positionality of the presenter to the research and research approach?
  • Did the presentation clearly describe the research strategy/design and the results/findings of the research?
  • Did the presentation clearly describe the (or potential) conclusions, outcomes and impact of the research
  • Was the PowerPoint slide well-defined? Did the slide enhance the presentation?

Engagement & Communication:

  • Was the oration delivered clearly?
  • Was the language appropriate for a non-specialist audience
  • Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for the research, capture & maintain the audience’s attention?

Video and sound quality of live virtual event presentations will NOT be part of the adjudication criteria
