BC Children's Hospital Research Institute members are engaged in health research that leads to exciting discoveries and creative solutions for the benefit of children and families.

There are five membership categories available at the Research Institute:

  • Investigator
  • Affiliate Investigator
  • Investigator Emeritus/Emerita
  • Trainee
  • Research Community Member

More information about the eligibility criteria, responsibilities and benefits of each category can be found in the Membership General Guidelines.

Membership Categories

Investigator

Investigators can enjoy many benefits, such as access to:

  • Funding opportunities for the Investigator and for their trainees' child health focused research projects
  • Core facilities
  • Numerous additional research support services

If you meet the following criteria, you may be eligible for Investigator membership:

  • Engage in child health research
  • Have a university faculty appointment in BC or the Yukon—either a grant-/partner-/tenure-track or tenured academic faculty, clinical faculty, lecturer, or adjunct position—that supports you to apply for and hold external research funding

  • Have evidence of Knowledge Mobilization (KM) reflected on your ORCID. In alignment with DORA principles, KM includes (but is not limited to) presentations, reports, policy briefs, and peer-reviewed publications

Please note that Investigator membership is reviewed every three years to ensure members are meeting responsibilities and expectations.

Additional eligibility criteria is listed on the Investigator Membership Application Form and Membership General Guidelines.

Affiliate Investigator

An Affiliate Investigator is an individual who has primary affiliation with a research institute that only allows one primary research institute (i.e., Investigator level) affiliation. This category also includes former BCCHR Investigators who have moved academic institutions outside BC and the Yukon. Affiliate Investigators are engaged in child health research and actively engaged in a BCCHR Research Theme.

Please note that Affiliate Investigator appointments are rare and are granted only if they are considered important to the success of a Theme’s research program. As Affiliate memberships are valid for one year, the Research Services team will reach out annually to renew this appointment.

Additional eligibility criteria is listed on the Affiliate Investigator Membership Application Form and Membership General Guidelines.

Investigator Emeritus/Emerita

This category includes former Investigators who wish to maintain a connection with BC Children's Hospital Research Institute in their retirement.

Please note, a retired researcher who still leads an active research program may elect to remain as an Investigator, or be listed as an Investigator Emeritus/Emerita.

No additional application is required. Retired Investigators can contact resinfo@bcchr.ca to update their membership.

Trainee

Trainees include Graduate Students, Postdoctoral Fellows and Clinical Residents/Fellows who are primarily supervised by a BCCHR Investigator. Trainees may be based on the Oak Street Campus or off-site; those who are based off-site may need to come to the Oak Street Campus to access some resources.

No application is required. Trainees automatically become BCCHR members through the Onboarding process upon arrival, done in conjunction with their BCCHR research supervisor.

Research Community Member

This category includes individuals who are connected to research or wish to be a member of the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute community, but who would not be classified in one of the above categories.

This includes:

  • Healthcare Professionals
  • Research Staff (lab managers, technicians, research assistants)
  • Administrative Staff
  • Students (undergraduate and medical students)
  • Volunteers
  • Patient Partners

Research Community Members can enjoy benefits such as access to:

  • BCCHR newsletters with the latest research news and events
  • Invitations to attend special research events and activities (workshops, seminar series, etc.)
  • The internal ResearchHub Intranet for BCCHR resources and information on support services
  • Collaboration and networking opportunities with other BCCHR community members

Research Staff, Administrative Staff, Students, and Volunteers automatically become BCCHR Research Community Members through the Onboarding process upon arrival, done in conjunction with their BCCHR research supervisor.

Healthcare Professionals and Patient Partners who are collaborating with BCCHR Investigators can also be onboarded by the Investigator or a designated member of the Investigator's Research TEam.

To apply for Investigator or Affiliate Investigator membership, please complete the appropriate application form (below) and submit it to your chosen BCCHR Research Theme (full instructions included in the application form).

All other membership categories do not require an application. Trainees, Research Staff, Administrative Staff, Students and Volunteers automatically become BCCHR members through the Onboarding process upon arrival, done in conjunction with their BCCHR research supervisor.

Healthcare Professionals and Patient Partners who are collaborating with BCCHR Investigators can also be onboarded by the Investigator or a designated member of the Investigator's Research Team.
