- Overview
-
My work aims to address challenging issues in care and services for children with disabilities and their families in innovative ways. It is rooted in intensive collaborations with selected researchers and colleagues at BC Children's Hospital; other BC Children's Hospital and UBC researchers, with whom we in turn link to the Canadian NeuroDevNet network; and a research team investigating caregiver health which is distributed across a number of academic centres in Canada.
I also co-founded and remain linked to a research collaborative within Developmental Neurosciences & Child Health known as Children and Youth with Disabilities in Society (CYDiS). The CYDiS mission is to promote, conduct, support and coordinate research aimed primarily at understanding needs, measuring health status, and evaluating and improving services for this population across all relevant service sectors (including health, education, family and social services).

Current Projects
Laying the groundwork for detailed analysis, description and evaluation of less traditional and more “holistic” habilitative interventions for children with neurodisability, with particular focus on a community-based, individualized program for children with various kinds of disorders (hence “non-categorical” approach), which uses movement and gymnastics.Current Projects
An exploration of medical and disability perspectives as they apply to children with neurodevelopmental problems, contrasting emphasis on named health conditions (i.e. diagnoses) with functional characteristics; exploration of the implications of different perspectives on planning and organization of clinical services, research and health and social policy (interpretive synthetic review) .Current Projects
Secondary analysis of a Canadian national disability data set (Participation and Activity Limitations Survey, PALS 2006) in order to examine childrens’ diagnosis status (specifically, presence or absence of a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder) in relation to functional status, and to model the relative contribution of each of these health ‘components’ to child participation and family wellbeing.
Research Roundup: April 2022
This month’s Research Roundup covers the impact of mandatory Active Play Standards on childcare centres’ policies and practices in British Columbia, a positive and supportive way to increase health behaviours and maintain bone health in children, and how changing terminology can help support kids with neurodisability.
