- Overview
-
My clinical research focus areas include prediction of outcomes for children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and improving care through longitudinal outcomes registries, study of physical activity in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, transition of youth with rheumatic disease to adult care, and translational research in autoinflammatory disease. The strong partnerships of our Division of Pediatric Rheumatology as well as pan-Canadian collaborators in the Canadian Alliance for Pediatric Rheumatology Investigators fuel my research projects and ensure successful translation of research results to practice. I have particular interest in creative knowledge translation in pediatric rheumatology research, and active inclusion of patients and families into research.

Promoting successful transition from pediatric rheumatology care to adult care for youth with chronic rheumatic diseases:
I am a collaborator on several projects aimed at development and testing of transition resources for youth and younger children with JIA or other rheumatic diseases. Our research group is currently doing a randomized controlled trial of a youth on line self management website called Teens Taking Charge, aimed at youth with JIA. We are in the development phase for a similar self management program for younger children with JIA and their parents. We are also starting final testing of a transition questionnaire called RACER (Readiness for Adult Care in Rheumatology), which will be tested in a number of Canadian pediatric rheumatology centres.LEAP: Linking Exercise, Activity and Pathophysiology in Canadian Children with Arthritis: A Pan-Canadian Team:
I am a co-nominated Principal Investigator on this pan-Canadian project studying physical activity in children with JIA. Our project aims are to study the determinants of physical activity in children with JIA, to examine variables that predict PA in these patients, and to determine how PA influences clinical outcomes, inflammatory biomarkers, and the development of bone and muscle in children with JIA. The project involves 12 pediatric rheumatology centres across Canada and we have enrolled nearly 500 children and youth with JIA into a 2 year longitudinal study, looking at their level of PA over time as well as clinical, inflammatory, bone and muscle parameters. In addition, we are performing a novel pilot exercise intervention study, looking at new ways to encourage increased targeted activity in children with JIA that is safe and effective as well as fun.ReACCH-Out: Research on Arthritis in Canadian Children, Emphasizing Outcomes: a Canadian multi-centre collaborative outcomes study
I am one of four principal investigators for this seminal CIHR-funded NET project, in which our pediatric rheumatology research program in Canada enrolled 1,500 newly diagnosed children with JIA into a longitudinal registry. This project has resulted in 6 publications to date and a number more in preparation, and is providing us with important data demonstrating the trajectory of JIA using modern treatments, prediction of disease course using disease features from early in disease, evaluation of pain over the course of JIA, incidence and prevalence of JIA-associated uveitis, as well as other areas of research. This project has provided the infrastructure to allow CAPRI to obtain funding and move forward to establish a long-lasting Canadian JIA registry.Research Group MembersElse Bosman, Research and Database coordinator

Government of Canada invests $20 million to improve health outcomes of children living with rare diseases
The Government of Canada is providing $20 million over five years for the creation of RareKids-CAN: Pediatric Rare Disease Clinical Trials and Treatment Network. This national network, of which BCCHR will be a part, will support national and international clinical trials to advance discoveries, enable better prevention, diagnosis, and treatments, to improve health outcomes for children and adolescents affected by rare diseases.
