Dr. Allison Ezzat’s current research applies implementation science methodologies to advance the primary prevention of knee injuries in adolescents in real-world settings. She has a focus on reducing gender disparity for girls/women in injury risk and decreasing the long-term injury burden (e.g. knee osteoarthritis).

Co-design and evaluation of an injury prevention program and implementation plan in girls community soccer
Sport has innumerable physical and mental health benefits; however, it is the leading cause of injury in Canadian youth. Soccer is the highest participation sport among girls in British Columbia, yet serious injuries affect 1 in 20 girls annually impacting quality of life and physical activity. For example, 50% of those who sustain a knee injury will develop osteoarthritis, a painful and disabling joint disease, within two decades. Strong evidence proports that injury prevention programs can prevent two-thirds of injuries, yet a research-to-practice gap persists with poor sustainability of generic injury prevention programs designed without comprehensive implementation strategies or end-user engagement. Using a participatory design approach with integrated stakeholder engagement, this project will implement and evaluate a theory-informed, evidence-based, context-specific injury prevention program with a co-designed sustainability strategy in girls community soccer. Using mixed-methods we will: 1) synthesize research evidence and key learnings from global experts; 2) understand end-user needs and context; 3) co-design an implementation and sustainability plan with community stakeholders; 4) evaluate feasibility and conduct a process evaluation.
