- Overview
-
A healthy diet can reduce the risk of developing certain chronic diseases. As the incidence of diet-related diseases continues to increase, there is an urgent need for policy change. Dr. Mahsa Jessri, Canada Research Chair in Nutritional Epidemiology for Population Health, is working on research to inform changes to Canada’s nutrition policies. Dr. Jessri and her research team are developing multi-dimensional dietary patterns aimed at preventing chronic diseases and investigating the systems that underpin policies, such as those related to package labelling and restriction of marketing to children. The innovative big data infrastructure they are maintaining will enable state-of-the-art, timely modelling of how Canadians’ health and health care outcomes might shift in response to policy changes that focus on dietary patterns and food supply.

Current Projects:
Dr. Mahsa Jessri is an Assistant Professor and Canada Research Chair in Nutritional Epidemiology for Population Health in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (CHSPR) at UBC. Her research program focuses on providing the evidence-base and decision tools to inform national guidelines and policies for reducing the burden of chronic diseases across the lifespan. Dr. Jessri is an expert in public health, nutritional epidemiology, surveillance and methodology, biostatistics, as well as public health nutrition policy and her program is uniquely at the intersection of population and public health and nutritional sciences and dietetics.
Her laboratory at the UBC Vancouver Campus is focused on population modeling of the impact of lifestyle patterns on health and healthcare system, predictive modelling, population health impact assessment of public health nutrition policies, and nutritional monitoring and surveillance. Her team is also involved in design and implementation of personalized risk assessment tools (https://www.projectbiglife.ca/) and educational resources with the goal of promoting healthy eating behaviours among individuals. Dr. Jessri’s research program addresses two key objectives:
-To develop, validate and implement models and dietary assessment tools to support public health nutrition planning and monitoring at the population level
-To promote healthy lifestyle behaviours among individuals (children, adolescents and adults) through development and application of novel personalized web-based calculatorsGrantsCanadian Foundation for Innovation John R.
