What children eat in their early years shapes their health for a lifetime. My research asks a simple but important question: how can government food policies help children and youth eat better and live healthier lives? I use large national datasets and computer models to measure whether policies like nutrition labels on food packages, restrictions on junk food marketing to kids, and changes to the food supply actually improve what children eat and reduce their risk of diseases like heart disease and diabetes later in life.

A major focus of my work is ensuring that food policies help all children equally, not just those who are already well-off. I study whether certain policies do more to help children in lower-income families, and newcomer populations. I also build free, publicly available tools that families, dietitians, and doctors can use to quickly check how healthy a child’s or adult’s diet is and what changes could make the biggest difference.

Working closely with policy makers and international organizations, I translate research findings into practical advice that governments can use when designing food policies. My ultimate goal is to helping the governments give every child in Canada and beyond the best possible start through a healthier food environment.

Front-of-Package Nutrition Labels and Food Marketing to Children: Building the Evidence for Protecting Children in Digital Food Environments

Canada has introduced front-of-package (FOP) nutrition symbols that flag foods high in sodium, sugar, and saturated fat, and is developing regulations to restrict child-appealing food marketing. My team is investigating whether these two policies can protect children and youth from unhealthy food choices. We completed a national cohort study linking Canadians’ consumption of FOP-eligible products to hospitalization outcomes using linked nutrition survey and health administrative data—the first study of its kind. We have also developed scalable methods to identify and classify FOP-eligible products within national dietary surveys, enabling ongoing population surveillance. In parallel, my PhD student has completed a systematic review and meta-analysis quantifying the effects of commercial food marketing on children’s dietary intake with an explicit equity focus. This program of research directly informs nutrition policies.

Population Health Model–Nutrition (POHEM-Nutrition): Microsimulation for Evaluating the Impact of Food Policies on Children’s and Population Health

In collaboration with Statistics Canada, I co-developed POHEM-Nutrition, which integrates dietary intake data into Canada’s national chronic disease microsimulation platform. This model projects how changes in food policies or dietary intakes translate into changes in cardiovascular disease events, premature mortality, and healthcare costs across the population, including children and youth. We also developed risk prediction tools that are publicly available through ProjectBigLife.ca and used by public health units and clinicians. This infrastructure enables estimation of interventions and their cost-effectiveness, and identify which population subgroups, including children in lower-income and marginalized families, stand to benefit most.
