Overview

Dr. Edmond Chan is a clinical investigator at the BCCH Research Institute and his research interests are in food allergy and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). As of Dec 2021, he has 148 peer-reviewed publications. Multi-centre national and international research studies include an oral cow’s milk immunotherapy clinical trial, several epicutaneous peanut immunotherapy clinical trials, national food allergy registries (peanut, seafood, etc), a national anaphylaxis registry, CHILD study birth cohort peanut allergy outcomes, national oral food challenge barriers & solutions, Health Canada study of emerging food allergens, national/international early peanut introduction implementation studies, and use of Epitope Mapping for food allergy diagnosis.

Local (including provincial) projects that have national extensions include our food allergy E-Health tool (Allergycheck.ca), food allergy-related anxiety, confidence with using epinephrine autoinjectors, allergy outcomes among premature infants, and selective/cost-effective use of component resolved testing for food allergy diagnosis. EoE specific projects together with Gastroenterology (Dr Vishal Avinashi) include: our unique EoE registry, EoE Biomarkers and epigenetic markers, the interaction between oral immunotherapy and EoE, organoids, EoEHSS (Histology scoring system), and T-cell assays for food triggers of EoE (and FPIES).

QI (Quality improvement) has been focused primarily on real-world pre-school peanut oral immunotherapy, which has expanded to multiple foods, cost-effectiveness, adherence (e.g. text messaging), virtual care, milk/egg ladders, and sublingual immunotherapy in older children. He has been an author on multiple clinical practice guidelines including CPS/CSACI and NIAID/National Institutes of Health) food allergy prevention guidelines, CSACI oral immunotherapy guidelines, and AGA/Joint Task Force EoE guidelines.
