Hasina Samji

PhD, MSc

Affiliate Investigator, BC Children's Hospital
Senior Scientist in Population Mental Well-being, BC Centre for Disease Control
Affiliate Scholar, Human Early Learning Partnership, University of British Columbia
Director, Capturing Health and Resilience Trajectories (CHART) Lab

Dr. Hasina Samji received her doctorate in infectious disease epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she also completed a Master of Science degree. She holds joint appointments at the BCCDC as a Senior Scientist in Population Mental Wellbeing, and as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Dr. Samji has expertise in the design and implementation of observational cohort studies and the analysis of administrative health data. She is an expert in youth mental health and wellbeing, intersectoral collaboration, linked datasets, and school health. Dr. Samji leads the Capturing Health and Resilience Trajectories (CHART) Lab, an interdisciplinary team focused on identifying social and structural determinants of mental health and mobilizing research into action to promote social justice and youth mental wellbeing. She is the Principal Investigator for the Youth Development Instrument (YDI), a study that measures predictors of positive youth wellbeing, mental health, and development among high school students, with youth engagement and collaborative design at its core. In her public health role, Dr. Samji is working to articulate a public mental health system in BC that promotes positive mental health and wellbeing at the population level in addition to monitoring and addressing mental illness. She also studies how public health and education systems can better intersect to support young people’s wellbeing.

Youth Development Instrument

Youth achieve positive developmental outcomes when they learn skills to negotiate adversity and establish healthy behaviours that promote well-being in early life. The Youth Development Instrument (YDI) is a survey of students that aims to identify the individual and contextual resources, opportunities, and practices that foster or hinder positive youth development. It is a collaborative project, developed in partnership with researchers, school districts, community partners, policymakers, practitioners, and young people themselves.

The YDI is a school-based, self-report survey for students in grades 10-12, designed to identify the resources, opportunities, and practices that support positive youth development and hear directly from young people about what matters most to them. Since its pilot in 2020, over 43,000 students across British Columbia (BC) have participated in the YDI. The survey takes a strengths-based approach and is organized into five dimensions: social and emotional learning, physical and mental wellbeing, learning environment and experiences, and navigating the world. The YDI items and findings are continuously discussed with the CHART Youth Advisory Council (YAC), a group of ~25 youth between 15-18 years old from across BC.
