Overview

Dr. Hasina Samji received her doctorate in infectious disease epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she also completed a Master of Science degree. She holds joint appointments at the BCCDC as a Senior Scientist, and as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Dr. Samji has expertise in the design and implementation of observational cohort studies and the analysis of administrative health data. She studies healthcare access for underserved populations, including people living with HIV, people who use drugs, and children and youth. She is a Research Associate at the Centre for Applied Research in Mental Heath and Addictions (CARMHA-SFU) and has spearheaded research to estimate the prevalence of mental disorders in BC to inform health services planning for the BC Ministry of Health. Dr. Samji is the Principal Investigator for the Youth Development Instrument (YDI), a study measuring predictors of positive youth well-being, mental health, and development in high school students in collaboration with the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP-UBC), community and clinical partners and youth themselves.

Research

Youth Development Instrument
Youth achieve positive developmental outcomes when they learn skills to negotiate adversity and establish healthy behaviours that promote well-being in early life. The Youth Development Instrument (YDI) is a survey of students that will identify the individual and contextual resources, opportunities, and practices that foster or hinder positive youth development. It is a collaborative project with researchers from SFU and the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP-UBC), school district and community partners, policymakers and practitioners, and young people themselves.

Grade 11 students will be provided a one-time survey and with the option to provide contact details for a follow-up survey. We will build on HELP’s Early (Kindergarten) and Middle Years (Grades 4, 7) Development instruments by asking questions related to social and emotional learning, physical and mental well-being, school experiences, time use, and connectedness, and add new developmentally appropriate questions focusing on youth purpose, future goals, and romantic relationships. We will use linked data to follow student trajectories for important outcomes such as high school graduation, health services utilization and mental well-being.
