Research

Go Play Outside! Reframing risk to promote children’s outdoor play
Funded by the Lawson Foundation, the goal of this study is to develop an online tool to influence parents perceptions of risk in outdoor play. Our goal is to encourage parents to let their kids out to play and to stimulate a societal shift in how outdoor risky play is viewed and highlight the importance of it to children’s development.

CHILDS Play (Creating Health Inspiring Landscape Designed Spaces for Play)
This research program examines children's need for risky outdoor play opportunities. We are currently conducting two studies within this program:
The State of Play: Socio-ecological perspective on children’s outdoor play
Funded by CIHR, this study research seeks to gain the perspective of children aged 10-13 years and their parents on why they are motivated - or not - to play outside. We will use children's and parents' perspectives to develop an index of the playability of outdoor environments - the extent to which a given environment is friendly for outdoor play. The playability index will be useful for designing our urban environments to meet children's needs and positively influence their health.
