Seminars will consist of short student presentations on their summer research project. This is an excellent opportunity to practice speaking in front of colleagues and will facilitate the sharing of data and research results.

New to presenting virtually? Watch the 'Giving a Good Online Presentation' workshop presented by SciCats, the Science Communication Action Team.

Each week, students will receive an email bulletin about upcoming events and their available formats. Attendance will be recorded during each session.

Presentation Formats

Logistics – 3 Minute Presentation

Challenge yourself by creating a compelling narrative about your research project with minimal visual aids. This is an excellent opportunity to try presenting briefly and concisely for a non-specialist audience.

Format – For every session, up to 15 students will be scheduled to present. The format will be very similar to the "Three Minute Thesis" competitions. This includes:

  • 3 minutes to present on your current research project
  • One single, static PowerPoint slide is permitted (no slide transitions, animations or 'movement' of any description)
  • No additional electronic media (ie. sound and video files) permitted
  • No additional props (ie. laser pointers, costumes, laboratory equipment or musical instruments) permitted

This format will not include a Q&A period. Audience members with follow-up questions are encouraged to reach out to presenters directly after the session has concluded.

Moderator – The sessions will be moderated by BCCHR trainees who will introduce each speaker and monitor the time. Moderators will also be asked to complete a basic evaluation form for each presenter (note: feedback for the 3 Minute Presentation will be limited. For more constructive feedback, consider signing up for an 8 Minute Presentation instead). Each session will also include an audience vote for the People’s Choice Winner, who will receive a $10 Starbucks giftcard.

Logistics – 8 Minute Presentation

Format – For every session, up to 5 students will be scheduled to present. You will have:

  • 8 minutes to present on your current research project
  • As many PowerPoint slides as required. This format has no restrictions on animations, transitions, videos, etc.
  • An additional 2 minutes to answer questions from the moderator and audience
  • The structure and format of the presentation is up to the presenter’s discretion. While drafting your slides, please ensure they can be easily understood by an interdisciplinary group

Moderator – The sessions will be moderated by BCCHR trainees who will introduce each speaker, monitor the time and encourage dialogue. Moderators will also be asked to complete an evaluation form for each presentation. A summary will be sent to the presenter the following week.

Announcements

An announcement regarding your presentation will be included online and in the weekly bulletin. One week prior to the presentation date, students will be contacted to confirm details.
