Registration
Students participating in the Summer Student Research Program will have the opportunity to attend workshops, presentations and networking events. Each week, students will receive an email bulletin about upcoming events. Attendance will be recorded during each session. If you have any questions, please email us at reseduc@bcchr.ca.
Participation
Students will have up to three ways to participate in the Summer Student Research Program. The available formats of each activity will be specified in the calendar below, the session descriptions and the weekly email bulletins.
- In-Person: Students working onsite will be able to attend sessions directly at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, allowing them to participate in hands-on activities and engage with speakers and other students.
- Virtually: For remote students or those who cannot attend in-person, they can watch certain sessions virtually in real-time. If a virtual option is available, students can find the Zoom link in the weekly bulletins or calendar below. The sessions will either be in Zoom Meeting format (webcams and mics are enabled), or in Zoom Webinar format (webcams and mics are disabled).
- On-Demand: For students who cannot attend a session in real-time, they can watch recorded sessions on their own schedule. While some sessions will be available on-demand and posted in the Video Library, not all activities will have this option due to facilitator preference or unexpected technical difficulties. Sessions that will not be recorded will be stated in the weekly bulletins and calendar below. To have on-demand sessions count towards your attendance, students will need to watch at least 80% of the session. If you have any questions about your watch time, our team will be able to confirm it with the Zoom watch history reports.
Attendance Requirements
Are you receiving a BCCHR or BCCHR-Partnered Summer Studentship?
BCCHR-funded students are required to participate in a minimum of 12 of the planned activities in-person, virtually or on-demand. Funding may be withdrawn if participation is limited.
Are you receiving funding from elsewhere or volunteering?
To be eligible to participate in Poster Day and/or receive a certificate of program completion, students are required to participate in a minimum of 10 of the planned activities in-person, virtually or on-demand.
How do you track your attendance record?
In-person participants will need to sign-in at the registration table located in the session location. For virtual participants, please ensure your full name and email on your Zoom account are up-to-date.
Students watching on-demand from the Video Library will need to register their details to access each Zoom recording. As our team tracks the watch time of these recordings, students will need to watch at least 80% of the recording to have it count towards their attendance.
A link for viewing the attendance tracking sheet for the entire program will be sent directly to students. Please note this sheet will not be updated in real-time. Tracking needs to be updated manually, so expect a small delay in posted information.
Schedule
Please review the summer schedule below carefully. We recommend you plan enough time in your own schedule to attend the sessions in real-time in order to interact with speakers, network with other students and ask questions directly.
Why are workshops and seminars scheduled for different times and days of the week during the program? We realize it can be difficult to follow a rotating schedule daily. Unfortunately clinical obligations and restrictions on facilitator availabilities make it difficult to have a regular schedule.
We have a variety of activities planned over the next two months, with many sessions targeted for students enrolled in the Summer Student Research Program. These sessions have been designed to introduce you to a wide range of research areas. They will help you build your research, academic and professional development skills, as well as provide opportunities for you to network with your peers. To better reflect the diversity of research and experience among students, the curriculum includes introductory and intermediate levels. Be sure to review the full session descriptions to see what activities are the best fit for you.
As planning for the 2024 summer program continues, the schedule may be subject to change. Please scroll to June-July to see the sessions.
2022/2023 Video Library
For students interested in watching recordings from previous Summer Student Research Programs, see the 2022/2023 Video Library on the ResearchHub (BCCHR/PHSA/UBC network account required). If you're directed to the general ResearchHub homepage after logging in, you can find the 2022/2023 Video Library here.
Please note these 2022/2023 recordings are supplementary material and will not count towards your current attendance. All available recordings from the 2024 summer program will be posted in a separate Video Library.
