Building and Facilities

The 46-acre Oak Street Campus (commonly referred to as the C&W Campus) is home to multiple leading healthcare organizations: BC Children’s HospitalBC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre, BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services and Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children. Ideally located, the campus is only a 10 minute drive from downtown Vancouver and a 30 minute drive from the University of British Columbia.

Transportation

  • Bike to Work - The Oak Street Campus is connected by various bike routes and has many options for bike parking onsite. For access to the locked bicycle cages at BCCHR, please contact the BCCHR Facilities Team.  
  • Parking - All parking onsite is pay parking, effective 24 hours a day and is available on a first-come basis. General parking rates are $3.50/hour or $14.25/day.
  • Children's & Women's Shuttle - The C&W Shuttle is available for transportation between the Canada Line King Edward Station and the Oak Street Campus free of charge. The shuttle departs from the King Edward SkyTrain Station (right outside the skytrain entrance, northwest corner of King Edward and Cambie) and drops-off at the BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre, entrance #93. The shuttle departs every 14 minutes from 6:30 am to 10:00 am and 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. To see the Shuttle Schedule, you need to be on the BCCHR/PHSA network. 

  • Inter-Hospital Shuttle Service - Free shuttle service is available to all the hospitals in Vancouver. The shuttle operates from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm between Monday-Friday. Valid hospital photo ID (your security access card) is required to ride. To see the Online Schedule, you need to be on the BCCHR/PHSA network. Please note that the drop-off location and shuttle schedule is subject to change. 

Study Facilities

  • Reading Room - At the research building, the David Hardwick Reading Room (Room 3051) includes a quiet study space for students and a group meeting room. 
  • Study Learning Commons - Learning & Development has partnered with the UBC Faculty of Medicine to provide a Study & Learning Commons for all students on the Oak Street Campus. UBC Library Services | Room Bookings
    The Study & Learning Commons is located on the 4th floor of the Shaughnessy Building. The quickest route from BC Children's Hospital Research Institute is through the North Entrance of the Children’s Hospital. Follow the long corridor and veer left at the junction (past the cafeteria). Continue down the corridor following the signs for “A to L, Women’s Health Centre.” At the intersection take the elevators to the 4th floor. The commons area is on the left (past the red couches).
  • Study Carrels - Built-in study carrels are available in various locations throughout the research building for students and trainee use. Check with your supervisor or research team for more information.

Safety Onsite

The Oak Street Campus has full time security personnel who provide security services including security patrols, emergency response, staff and visitor escorts, key control, lost and found, parking enforcement, staff education, security audits and investigations.

During work hours they can be reached via the non-emergency line at ext. 2999. For 24-hour emergency support contact ext. 899.

To stay safe onsite, security recommends the following:

  • Always wear your photo identification while onsite.
  • Lock/close your work area including windows when you leave, especially if working alone or outside of regular hours.
  • Ensure all personal belongs are safely locked up, and do not leave keys in plain sight.

Training Courses

Depending on your responsibilities, you may also be required to enroll for additional training courses. Check with your supervisor for the requirements in your research area and refer to the UBC Policies & Guidelines.

For lab safety, a number of important policies and information related to waste disposal, Work Safe BC, ergonomics in the laboratory, and the UBC Accident/Incident Report Form used by researchers can be accessed via the BCCHR Facilities Team

Counselling Service

UBC Undergraduate, Medical or Graduate Students: UBC Counselling Services provides free, confidential counselling on the Oak Street Campus. To make an appointment onsite, please call 604-822-3811 and indicate you need an appointment on the Oak Street Campus.
